Chapter 01 — The Name

Ti·na·she
/ tiˈnaʃe /

"We are with God" · "God is with us"

Before he ever threw a pitch, his name had already told the story: he would not walk this road alone.

Every athlete has a number. Tinashe's is 74, stitched across his back in Benoni Indians red. But before the number came the name — chosen by his family, spoken over him as a child, and carried onto every dusty diamond he has ever played on.

In a sport where South Africa is still writing its first chapters, faith is not decoration. It is fuel. It is what gets a young pitcher to practice before sunrise, through losing seasons and long odds, in a country where baseball fields are rare and the route to the top runs through belief as much as talent.

Chapter 02 — Origin

Boksburg,
East of Johannesburg

Boksburg was born in 1887, in the gold rush that built the East Rand. For over a century this town pulled gold out of the earth — mine headgear on the skyline, working shifts, working families. It is a place that understands early mornings and long odds.

A town that dug gold out of the ground raised a boy chasing the green and gold. That is the whole story, in one town and one name.

And quietly, Boksburg has become a home of South African junior baseball. The national U15 Africa Qualifier was hosted at the Boksburg Cardinals Baseball Club in January 2024, and the 2026 South African National Championships — the tournament that fed the national squad — were played right here, on Tinashe's home ground. Under jacarandas that turn the spring purple, this is where a small boy in a too-big white helmet first stood at a tee — and refused to put the bat down.

Chapter 03 — The Journey

Running
the Bases

A baseball life is measured in ninety-foot increments. You do not get to skip a base. This is the route Tinashe has run so far — dust, then red, then green and gold.

On deck · The early years

A boy and a tee

It starts the way all of it starts: a plastic tee, a borrowed helmet sliding over his eyes, and the long fields of the Benoni Northerns Indians. The swing was small. The love was not. While friends chased soccer balls, Tinashe kept coming back to a game most of his neighbourhood had never watched.

First base · Provincial colours January 2024

Gauteng calls

Named to the Gauteng U15 squad for the National Baseball Championships in Gqeberha — one of eleven Benoni Indians U15 players to earn provincial colours that summer, part of a 49-strong club contingent. The first time the badge on his chest was bigger than his club.

Second base · The double 2025 / 26 season

A season to remember

With Dakota U15, Tinashe helped bring home both the league and the cup — a championship double the club printed a magazine about. Coaches started using a different word for him. Not promising. Dangerous.

Third base · The statement game January 2026

Seven runs, one afternoon

Against the Dodgemets, Dakota won 24–0 — and Tinashe drove in seven of those runs on two swings: a bases-clearing triple and an inside-the-park home run. The Dakota Times put his name in the headline. Scouts started writing it down.

Home · The green and gold 2026

South Africa selects Tinashe Mutseka

The road to national colours ran straight through his hometown: the 2026 South African National Championships were played in Boksburg, and from that tournament the national selectors named their squad. Selected for the South African WBSC U15 National Baseball Team, a Grade 9 learner from Boksburg now represents a nation of 60 million at the U15 Baseball World Cup in Mérida, Mexico — 25 September to 4 October 2026.

Extra innings · The horizon

Japan. America. The show.

The dream is written in two languages: to pitch professionally under the lights of Japan, and to take the mound in America. Nobody from his street has done it. That is exactly the point.

Chapter 04 — The Standing

Where He Ranks

South African Baseball publishes no individual rankings for U15 players — so standing here is measured the way the sport itself measures it: by selection. Every tier below is an independent choice made by accredited coaching panels, each one narrowing the field.

Club Champion

League & cup double winner with Dakota U15, 25/26 — the top side in his league.

Province 1 of 11

One of eleven U15 players from his club selected to represent Gauteng at the 2024 National Championships.

Nation Top ±20

Named to the South African U15 national squad after the 2026 Nationals in Boksburg — one of roughly twenty players selected from the entire country.

World №23

South Africa is ranked №23 in the WBSC world baseball rankings — the nation whose crest he now wears against the world's best U15 sides.

Methodology: derived from official selection tiers (club → provincial squad → national squad → World Cup roster) and the published WBSC national ranking. No invented numbers — only doors he has actually walked through.

04The finish

Tall, long-levered and loose-armed, Tinashe pitches with a high leg kick and a finish that folds him almost to the dirt — mechanics built on thousands of unglamorous repetitions on Benoni grass. The delivery in these frames is the same one heading to Mexico.

Chapter 07 — The Dream

From Boksburg
to the World

Baseball in South Africa is a young sport played with old-fashioned devotion — small clubs, volunteer coaches, parents behind the backstop. It has never had a deep pipeline to the professional game. Tinashe wants to be one of the players who builds it.

In September 2026 he wears the green and gold in Mérida, Mexico at the WBSC U15 World Cup, facing the best fifteen-year-olds on earth. After that, the map keeps going: Japan, where pitching is an art form. America, where the game's biggest stage waits.
